GETTING TO KNOW SONGWRITER AND INTERNATIONAL RECORDING ARTIST LUCKY MAYS
WHEN DID YOUR JOURNEY WITH MUSIC BEGIN?
I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember – I think my mom sat me at the piano when I was three or four years old when one of our baby chickens died, and I wanted to write a song about it. I guess that’s where the hint of melancholy in my music and lyrics comes from.
IS YOUR FAMILY MUSICAL?
I come from a family of goodhearted, hard-working people who love music and played music growing up. So, I was always looking forward to family gatherings where I often sat in awe and study of grandparents, aunts and uncles who sang their old favorites as well as original songs they had written. This encouraged me to fearlessly approach songwriting without restriction.
DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL FOR MUSIC?
After high school, I moved from my hometown of Albuquerque to Los Angeles where I attended music school (The Musician’s Institute) and was exposed to musicians from many world cultures – broadening my perspective and truly appreciating the community that music is. I briefly worked at Capitol Records in the master tape library – where I was in awe of being surrounded by the music of many of the great songwriters, artists, and producers in history. This experience birthed the idea that music is timeless, setting me on a path to create my own personal legacy.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH WRITING SONGS?
Over the years, my songwriting and production process continues to evolve, and I have developed consistencies that work best when they serve the song. So, depending on how the idea starts, my process is dictated from there. Typically, I start with a rhythm or a melody, sometimes a short lyric with a story idea and build from there. Whichever starting point seems to flow I will let it take its course naturally as far as I can let it. I record and document all my ideas along the way and edit as the story develops. This allows me to revisit concepts or melodies and articulate the message of the song.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF MUSIC TO WRITE?
I have written or co-written over 200 songs, maybe more, as writing is a big part of my daily life. I prefer to write music that falls into crossover or popular genres such as pop, country, rock, and R&B. However, I have scored music for film and write in several genres which helps me exceed perceived limitations and grow as a creative. As both a fan and creator of music, I feel most connected to a song that transcends genre because it has a story that a broader audience can relate to – and I am impassioned to tell my stories.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN MUSIC?
I have received awards regionally and nationally for songwriting, producing and performing, however, my biggest accomplishment to date is the songs themselves. My proud moments are listening back to a track that I played a role in and simply enjoying the music.
